Apprenticeships, innovation and business

I am working hard with local employers, colleges and schools to ensure that our young people have access to high-quality technical and vocational training. I have supported increased funding for apprenticeships, building on the excellent potential at Fareham College and CEMAST, and am pleased that the government is continuing to back this excellent form of training.

Locally, I am doing my best to bring businesses and young people together, and and have held 2 successful Apprenticeship Fairs in Fareham since my election in 2015. Over 1000 apprentices have commenced since 2015- a great sign that our next generation is being empowered through training and work.

The 2017 Apprenticeships Fair was packed with hundreds of people looking to find their perfect opportunity, taking the first steps in their career, or making a career switch. The event was open to people of all ages and held in Ferneham Hall.

At the 2017 fair there was a careers hub where people could attend workshops – supported by Fareham College, Santander and the National Careers Service – to improve their CV, take part in mock interviews and get advice on their presentation and digital skills.

I am planning another fair at Ferneham Hall 10am – 3pm on Thursday 8th March, all are invited to come along and find out what opportunities are available to them.

Nationally, I welcome the Government commitment to going further and delivering three million more apprenticeships by 2020.

To ensure high quality training an apprenticeship levy has been introduced on all large firms so that those that offer apprenticeships can get more back than they put in. I know the Department for Education will continue to work with employers on how the levy can be spent so that it works effectively and flexibly for employers, and supports productivity across the country.

I am pleased and encouraged by the commitment to pay 100 percent of training costs for employers with fewer than 50 employees who take on apprentices aged 16 to 18, along with an additional £1,000 paid to employers who take on 16 to 24 year olds who have been in care or who have an education and health plan. In total, more than £60 million will be invested in supporting the training of apprentices.
